One last look.

We had our final performance on Saturday, then strike, and we were out of the BCA by 2pm on Sunday. Then we had a cast party.

The run was fabulous, it was an absolutely unforgettable experience.

Many thanks to our absolutely AMAZING crew who did amazing and inspired work, our actors who were the most professional group of awesomely talented people, and to all of you who came and let us share this story with you.

Edge Boston Review

A lovely review from Edge Boston's Kilian Melloy.

This production makes use of a simple device to focus attention to the different characters. A cluster of platforms at different levels breaks up the performance space; the actors array themselves around the platforms, or venture into the audience (an effective technique, especially when it comes to an "in your face" moment of strident media voices).

The performances can be intimate, almost private; they can also be expansive, assertive, declamatory. It’s the difference between listening (as though for an answer) and declaring (as if to fend off any answer that is not the one already invested in), and the tension that arises between the two is propulsive and compelling.

Opening Night!

It's finally here! After all the amazing work done by our actors and all our wonderful technical staff we've arrived at opening night.

There are nerves (always are) but there's more of a sense of anticipation and excitement.

We just got word that the first weekend of performances are filling up! This is fantastic, but it means that you should get your tickets sooner to avoid being left out in the cold (literally, it's 30 degrees out there).

The second week of shows will fill up because reviews will have come out by then.

Production Update!

Happy November everybody!
One month until we open.

Last Thursday we had our first complete run through. Both acts, no stopping, full blocking, etc. We were performing for our designers so they could get a sense of what lighting, costumes, props, and sound cues we need. It went really well. The cast really pulled it out and all the designers were wowed.

The Laramie Project, 10 Years Later - The Lasting Legacy of Matthew Shepard was conceived and produced by Romaine Patterson, a life-long friend of Matthew Shepard and co-host of Derek and Romaine.

The two-hour audio documentary is made up of an unprecedented collection of interviews, including playwright Moises Kaufman and members of Tectonic Theater Company, who wrote the play The Laramie Project. The special, fashioned in the same style as the play, features an introduction by legendary journalist and SIRIUS host Barbara Walters and is narrated by acclaimed actress Stockard Channing. Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theater Company will recount their roles in writing the play, now one of the most highly produced plays in high schools, universities and community theaters across the country, and share their thoughts on its lasting impact.

Exciting times!

Romaine Patterson, a character in the Laramie Project and real life activist and radio host, put out a call for actors who had done the Laramie Project to do a special on her show.

We replied, and tonight we are recording snippets of the show which will be played on the air!

Listen to Sirius Radio channel 109 on Monday Oct 13th.

We're working on figuring out what time exactly, but it'll be between 6 and 10pm EST.

Puzzle Pieces

For those of you who don't know, The Laramie Project consists mostly of monologues which were culled from the hundreds of interviews conducted by the Tectonic Theater Project. The monologues are usually short and cut in between the other actor's, creating, in effect, "scenes". These are more accurately described as moments in the scrip.

The challenge in directing and rehearsing is deciding on the approach. Do we rehearse all the monologues by character, allowing the actors to create full fleshed portraits? Do we rehearse them as scenes, to let them interact and get a sense of the full moment?

Our answer was, let's do both!

We're starting out, these first few weeks, going through the script by character. The actors are finding some great things, and are really making every single character a full person, not just a caricature.

Later on, we will be putting all the pieces together. The actors will get to bounce their fully realized characters off each other (I am SO looking forward to that day) and we'll start to see the full arc of the piece.

Difficult? Yes.

Exciting? HECK YES!

Week Two!

Hello All!

Well, it's week two of rehearsals I and am excited to say that we've gotten replies from two Laramie residents (and characters) Zackie Salmon and Kerry Drake.

Danny, our director, sent them emails asking what they'd like audiences to know ten years later. It's oddly similar to the NYT Article last week, but at least we can say we sent our emails months ago!

It's been great to get that tangible personal connection with the work.

One of the reasons Danny chose to do produce "The Laramie Project" now is that it's the tenth anniversary of Matthew's death.

The original writers from the Tectonic Theater apparently had a similar thought.

First Rehearsal!

Last night we had our first rehearsal. Due to the monologue-y nature of the play we only worked with three of the cast members, but they were wonderful!

Both Danny and I were thrilled with the work done, and we can't wait for the rest of the week and the chance to see what the rest of our stellar cast brings to the table.

After living with Laramie for so long it's nice to (as Danny puts it) be able to talk about it with people who care and Get It.
